In 2022, Monkey Island began a transformative renovation project designed to enhance the living conditions for its monkey residents and elevate the visitor experience. Every step of the project was carefully aligned with the stringent standards of the Animal Welfare Act (AWA) to ensure the monkeys’ well-being while maintaining the island's unique charm.
Climate-Controlled Shelters
State-of-the-art air conditioning and heating systems were installed, ensuring the monkeys’ comfort year-round while meeting USDA and AWA requirements.
Improved Structures
Housing facilities were redesigned and constructed to align with AWA guidelines. These structures are built to be structurally sound, protect the monkeys from injury, securely contain them, and prevent other animals from entering.
Water and Electric Power
Reliable electric power was added to support heating, cooling, ventilation, and lighting needs. In compliance with AWA Section D, potable running water now ensures the monkeys’ hydration needs are met while facilitating cleaning and other husbandry activities.
Enhanced Landscaping
New trees and structures were added, enriching the monkeys' environment and preserving the island's natural beauty.
Educational Signage
Informative signage was installed to educate visitors about Monkey Island's history and its role in wildlife conservation.
During the renovations, the monkeys were temporarily relocated to Boyett’s Grove and Citrus Attractions, where they were provided with exceptional care. By March 25, 2024, the monkeys returned to their enhanced habitat, ready to thrive in an environment built with their safety and comfort in mind.
The path to completing these renovations was not without obstacles. The Board faced regulatory hurdles and unexpected setbacks that required determination, creativity, and teamwork to overcome.
Permitting Confusion and Compliance Issues
After securing funds from a successful 2021 fundraising banquet, the project began under the understanding that permits were not required. However, after construction was completed, the county reversed its stance, halted work, and declared the project non-compliant. The Board had to address discrepancies in elevation certificates, engineering documentation, and retrofitting requirements such as breakaway walls.
Electrical Challenges
Delays arose due to electrical permitting requirements managed by the US Army Corps of Engineers. The Board opted to implement solar power to meet USDA standards for climate control while promoting sustainability.
Despite the challenges, the Board collaborated with contractors, engineers, and regulatory agencies to ensure compliance with all requirements. Their unwavering commitment to creating a safe and enriching environment for the monkeys ultimately led to the project's successful completion.
